The most efficient oil fired water heater.

Truth be told I don’t know what the most efficient oil fired water heater is.

I know in my local area, with the distributors I work with, the Bock line of oil fired water heater tanks are our preferred oil fired tank and I believe they are the most inefficient but not 100% sure.     I’d love to see a case study or comparison chart about this.  (Maybe I will.)

The Bock line does have a Superior  Heat Exchanging Process & Venting, which is why I think they are the most efficient

Simply put, Bock has a Superior tank venting & heat exchange process design all oil fired Bock tanks have something called Turboflue.  Which is basically, metal fins that go throughout the vent column.   The metal fins captures more heat from the hot exhaust gases before they are released from the top of the tank into the chimney.   The metal fins capture more heat transfers it into the tank, which is a more efficient heat exchanging process that other competitors.      Bock’s website gets a bit more technical about their patented Turboflue® Heat Exchanger here.

Here’s a look at a Bock with a portion cut away so you can see the a section of the tank & venting from the inside.

  I personally took these pics.

157 159 160

Copying Bock’s design:    Although the Turboflue is patented by Bock,  just about all the other manufactures have added some kind of fins or baffling systems within their venting systems now to capture more heat and promote better heat exchange over previous generations.

Why is Bock the best oil fired water heater?

My customers often asking me, why is Bock the best oil water heater?

Bocks are over all the best built tanks, made of robust steel.   The tanks residential tanks weight 300-400 pounds, 30-40% heavier than the least expensive tanks options.   They fire chamber is made of a brick-clay like substaince, where other tanks use insuation that resembles fiberglass insulation in the attic.   Bock’s are better built, last longer, and are more efficient because of a better heat exchanging process.  The most important thing is, longevity and Bock has the reputation of building the longest lasting oil fired water heater tanks in the industry.

If you have been or about to go through a replacement or installation you know, or are about to find out, $ 2,000 dollars is the the cheapest way you can go for the least expensive new 30 gallon oil fired tank, in the best case situation.  Where a Bock may be a a couple hundred more dollars, with maintenance you might get  5-10 more years of service life over the cheapest option.

Predicting when a water heater will fail is impossible and water quality has everything to do with how quickly or slowly a tank will breakdown as well as it’s proper installation.  If you’re just flipping a house, you won’t get that added value of a long lasting tank, but if you plan on sticking around for more than 5 years or selling the home to someone you care about or want the new buyers to see a good name brand product the Bock is a great way to go.

Personal experience in the field:  We replace a lot of Bock tanks, as well as, Thermoflow, Everhot, Aero, Ford, Bradford White, & John Wood oil fired water heaters.  Now, I can say after seeing hundreds of oil fired water heaters on service or replacement calls, other than Ford tanks, (which are extinct,) we only see Bock’s making it passed that coveted 20 year mark.   I believe we keep seeing so Bocks consistently lasting for 15+ years because every employee is a shareholder, having a personal stake in the company.   The personal commitment of employee-owners gives Bock Water Heaters, and their customer support is spectacular.

Not to mention something a lot of Americans and I personally believe in, I like supporting American made products, and value quilty products and want to support family owned businesses or at least companies that treat their employees well.  Bock is the way to go if you’re located in the North East and you want a high quality oil fired water heater tank.

Note:  Before you call get the following information so we can make it as quick and painless as possible.

1) Check and see if you have a 30 or 50 gallon tank, it will say so on the label.   If you have 2 or less baths you prob have a 30, if you have more than 2 baths you likely have a 50.

2)  Find out how it’s vented by looking for the silver exhaust pipe.    It will either have the vent/exhaust pipe coming directly from the top/ center of the tank, or it will be coming out of the side/ rear of the tank.

3)  Check and see if you can see 1 or 2 oil lines attached to the burner.    There are only 2 types of systems.  a “1 line” will only have one oil line, a “duel line” system will have a feed & return (2 lines) attached to the burner it’s filter.

bockTruboflueHow can Bock be any more efficient than other types of oil fired water heaters?

It’s really all about the Heat Exchanging Process & Venting.   (Which are together, one and the same)

The metal fins capture more heat and transfers it into the tank, which is a more efficient heat exchanging process that other competitors.    Bocks website gets a bit more technical about their patented Turboflue® Heat Exchanger here.

Seniors Need Help!
As the federal government burns through money faster than it can be printed, more money is added to the economic system.   In theory, this “newly printed money” that was handed over to the banks, at nearly Zero % interest, was supposed to free up the credit market.   However, it’s been reported the mega banks held on almost all the money and used all our tax dollars to buy smaller competitors out.  They basically destroyed the global economy, then got bailed out and used our tax dollars to become more powerful than ever!  We live in a world we’re the value of the US dollar has been wildly diluted, (a gallon of milk if over $4, a red pepper cost $2) health care, transportation costs, and taxes are the rise for every single American.   Meanwhile, large mega banks & oil companies are making record profits and paying NO taxes!   Something seriously wrong is going on and before I start with my anti corporatocracy rant, lets get back to the topic at hand.  Seniors are feeling the economic pitch more than anyone else.  Millions of seniors throughout American are living in poverty!  And nobody seems to give a shit.  All I see on TV is politicians talking about how many bullets should or shouldn’t be allowed magazine, while 47 million Americans are on food stamps!   Statistically 50% of all American are living in or just above the poverty level, many of which are seniors, living well below poverty standards.   I cannot do much in this world, but I want to help where I can.  My world is water heaters, if you need a quote in Connecticut, I’d be horned to help.    Jay Sullivan-  Water Heating Expert.

How we can help-
For senior citizen relying on fixed incomes, getting the money together to replace an oil fired water heater might be nearly impossible.  It’s hart breaking seeing so many seniors living on extremely tight budgets, but it’s easy to see why this has happened.  The price of food, gas, health care, energy is sky rocketing, inflation is taking away decades of savings lighting fast.   To compound the problems, banks and investment funds are all paying an all time low on deposits, because their income is based on the US bond market, and the bond market is paying an all time low.   Contrary to what the politicians/ banksters/& Media Tri-fecta of deception says, the financial system is still in turmoil and thousands of seniors throughout Connecticut are at the breaking point.  A 30 or 50 gallon oil fired water heater replacement (costing thousands of dollars), would push many seniors to the breaking point/ take all their vital savings in one swoop.

Pricing Shock-
The harsh reality is, oil fired water heaters are the most expensive type of water heater on the market.

The tank can go from $900-$1,400  the burner is another $385,  so we’re over the $1,500 mark just on the parts, with even just minimal mark up.  We need a couple guys to get them safely on the truck, out of the truck, into your basement, getting the oil tank out of the basement, in the truck and to the recycling center.   With the installation and all the driving around, an oil fired water heater installation takes up more than half a day.

Competitors Pricing-
Most plumbers in CT are charging $2,300- $2,700 for 30 gallon models, and $2,800- $3,600 for 50 gallon models.
DO NOT TAKE MY WORK FOR IT, call some guys and find out for yourself.

Anode Rods Replacements

Removing Anode Rods for a Bock Water Heater

There is one way to get anode rods out of the water heater, hard physical brute force.

As the years pass it’s harder to remove anode rods, especially from oil fired water heaters.   Oil fired water heaters produce maximum hot water output compared to all other water heaters and for this reason the threads holding anode rod in the tank lock iron tight over time.  Depending on how “hard” you water and the number of years, the threads basically fuse together.   Trying to remove a fused anode rod from a tank is impossible without ripping it from the tank and destroying the tank in the process.

Ideally, replacing out the anode rods is done within the first 3 years of original installation and every 3 years there after.  After the 5th year past the original installation date, forget about removing anode rods- it’s too late, especially if you home is on well water.

If you want an anode rod replacement for you oil fired water heater, we are not interested in the job if the tanks installation date was longer than 5 years ago.

It’s down right impossible to remove the anode rods without damaging the tank.   Taring the anode rod from the tank  = total tank destruction in the tank and we’re not risking that. (and neither should you)

Our Anode Rod Replacement Procedure.

First, we drain a small amount of water from the heater after shutting off its electricity and cold water supply. Don’t drain the water to below the T & P valve, as the water’s weight will help keep the tank from moving while you work on loosing the rods.

Bock Water Heaters suggests using a 1/2″ drive breaker bar with a 1 1/6″ socket.   The breaker bar is preferable to a ratchet wrench, as it’s longer and won’t slip. If the anodes haven’t been removed for some time, a “plumber’s helper” (a pipe 1″ in diameter and 3′ long) fitted over the handle of the breaker bar will work every time.

Before trying to loosen the anode rods, use a rust devolving spay on them – WD40 works nicely. If you’re pressed for time, a product called “PB Blaster” (available at most automotive stores) works the best.

Old vrs New

Old vs New

Before trying to loosen the rods, lift the vent piping from the heater flue outlet just far enough to expose two large holes in the flue. These holes will accept a 3/4″ solid bar about 3′ to 4′ long, which will be used as a lever to help break the anodes loose.

Some contractors who normally replace anode rods during their annual service of customers’ water heaters are using electric impact drills.

After removing the old rods, we drain and flush the tank.  Before installing the new rods, we fill the tank at least three-quarters full to help in tightening down the new rods. And never use Teflon tape on the rods, as it acts as an insulator and makes them useless.  If you see Teflon tape on the water heaters nipples, and no pipe dope, the installer doesn’t know water heaters.  Pipe dope or pipe sealant is the only way to go.

anode rode replacement

Linked Anode Rods

We stock linked anode rods for the most common oil fired water heater models. The linked designed anode rod are easier to install, by eliminating any ceiling height issues. These Bock replacement anode rods also expensively than the full-length anode rods.

Lastly, we always using a bit of anti-seize compound on the rod threads before putting them back in will make it easy to fully tighten the parts and makes it much easier to get them out the next time.

oil fired water heater replacement options.

$

There are a couple options when replacing an oil fired water heater.

When you have oil water heater there are a couple directions you can go for your water heater replacement.
Clearly, natural gas or propane are the best ways to go, but the neither is available, we have to stick with oil, or go with an electric option.

Fuse box

This fuse box is filled. No room for an electric option, without a costly upgrade.

Note: Electric options are only possible if there is enough power supplied to the home, (at least 200 amp service) and there MUST be 2 open/ unused breaker slots in the electrical panel for the new power supply line.  Both standard and high-efficiency electric options are viable options, but only if your home has enough power and 2 open slots in your electrical panel.   And remember, we need a licensed electrician to install a new electrical power line ran from the fuse box to the installation site.

Each type of water heater comes at a different price point, uses different amounts of energy, and offer different pros and cons over the short and long term.   This proposal/ informational letter offers help so you can make an informed decision on your water heater replacement.    It also took a lot of work to put together, so please do not share this information with any other plumbing companies.

So..  What direction you go is greatly determined by the amount of hot water your home/ family requires.    Electrical options provide the least amount of hot water, and oil fired tanks offer the most, so there is a huge different in the performance or “Recovery Rating” between each.  Be aware of the Recovery Rating, and take into account the size of your family and or hot water demands when determining your new water heater.

OIL FIRED OPTIONS

The first quotes are for a Standard Replacement of an Oil Fired Water Heater.

Quotes include, tank, burner, materials, labor, taxes, removal and recycling of old equipment at proper facility, everything is included.

ELECTRIC OPTIONS

There are 3 directions to go for an Electric water heater.
1) Standard, 2) Heat Pump, or 3) Marathon.

electric water heater ct

standard electric water heater

1)     Standard, 80 gallon tank, is a conventional cheap electric water heater.  $1100-1300 + (electrical plus another $200-300 for running new power line to fuse box and installing new circuit breakers)  Plus terminating oil line and repairing chimney lining.  (Properly eliminating oil, venting lines and patching chimney)

Standard electric water heaters are cheap upfront but cost a lot in operating costs, provide almost no hot water during the second hour of usage, and they don’t last very long.   This only makes sense if you had no other choice.

Recovery: Rating  21 gal./hr. @ 90°F Rise   (After the tank drains down it only produces 21 gallons per hour of hot water, 4 hours to fully reheat)
Likely consumes  $600-$1000 (more for large families) in electric power.

REBATE ALERT:   This water heater comes with at least a  $400 rebate, other rebates are available depending on which utility companies you use.
(The heat pump water heater is the only water heater that qualifies for a rebate on this proposal)

Plumbing to be completed with heat pump water heater.
All plumbing associated with hot/cold lines, and condensate water.
Terminating oil line(s),  Terminating existing vent lines and repairing the chimney.

Electrical includes.
New power supply line ran from installation site, and terminated into the electrical service panel.
2 new 30 amp breakers properly grounded, installed in the electrical fuse box.
Proper electrical termination to the unit-  Grounded at water heater and grounded at the fuse box.

Additional Heat Pump Benefits:

  • Free de-humidifying for the basement.  (The heat pump will keep a medium sized basement 700-1200 sf’ dry, year round as a byproduct of the heat pump)
  • Save ware and tare on chimney.   (If you need to reline you chimney now, or in the near future.   Do Not, put that money into the chimney!  Instead, put some towards a new heat pump water heater now, and a new higher efficiency direct vented boiler or furnace down the road.   Neither product requires chimney venting &  both will reduce your energy bills.
  • Cleaner air in home.   (The heat pump doesn’t burn fuel so there is no exhaust vapors- cleaner air for your family)
  • Best option for the environment of all listed options.   (No question, this is the best option for the environment.)

marathon water heater ct

Marathon

3)     80 gallon, Marathon water heater.

The marathon is much like a Standard electric water heaters, but it offers a industry leading warranty on the tank from leaks.   This units do not offer any significant energy savings, and the do not qualify for any rebates.  The savings offered is long term.  This tanks can last 25-35 years and save you money by out lasting other options.   They are not cheap upfront, they also cost a lot in operating costs, and don’t provide very much hot water during the second hour of usage, but they last forever.   This only makes sense if you have very hard water, and a solar power system for you home.

PRICE:  $Call for details  Including electrical work,  Plus terminating oil line and repairing chimney lining.  (Properly eliminating oil, venting lines and patching chimney)

Recovery Rating:  21 gal./hr. @ 90°F Rise   (After the tank drains down it only produces 21 gallons per hour of hot water- so it takes 4.1 hours to fully reheat)  This is OK for a small family, not for a large family, or homes with large demands.

Energy usage.  Likely consumes  $600-$800+ in electric power.    (For medium sized families in CT)
Limited Lifetime factory warranty Tank  (reduced if on well water)

STORAGE TANKS & INDIRECT WATER HEATERS.

weil mclain indirect water heater

Weil Mclain ultra gold- Indirect water heater

A storage tank or indirect water heater could be a great option, but it’s likely your  boiler wasn’t sized large enough required for the additional heat load, then again maybe is it.   This is something that can be explored, but requires heat load calculations of your home, compared to the boilers BTU output, and the additional load for the domestic indirect water heater.   Adding a indirect water heater to an existing boiler is possible, but not a typical alternative to a oil fired water heater replacement.  Indirect water heaters are normally installed at the time of a new  boiler system installation.

-Prices on Indirect water heaters varrys quite a bit, by construction materials.   The three most popular construction types of indirect water heaters are; Steel glass-lined (6 year warranty), stone lined (10-20 year warranty), or stainless steal (lifetime warranty)

-PRICE:   $Call For Details.    Including electrical work,  Plus terminating oil line and repairing chimney lining.  (Properly eliminating oil, venting lines and patching chimney)

Recovery Rating:  100-200 gal./hr.  -Fed From Boiler-   This is OK for any sized family; 30 gallon tank small, 80 gallon for the largest demands.

Energy usage.  Likely consumes  $300-$500+ in oil.    (For medium sized families in CT)

NO Yearly Maintenance:
Available Limited Lifetime factory warranty Tank  (reduced if on well water)

ADDITIONAL NOTES:   Hot water usage figures.    Typically, a standard shower head uses 2.5+ gallons of water, per minute.   So a 5 minute shower uses 12.5 gallons of  water, 20 minute shower uses 50 gallons of hot water and 2-  20 minute showers, or 4-10 minute showers consume 100 gallons in the first home with just standard shower heads.  If you like the water scolding hot this uses almost full hot water, and if you only like warm showers your only using 70-80% full hot water.

You need to think about the amount of hot water you’re using.   The amount of minutes and temperature being used determines how much Recovery Rate you need.  Longer and hotter showers need more, Recovery Rate you meet demand.   Add up each shower head, and how many minutes they are all running together during peak demands times.  That way you can get an idea of how to figure out the right amount of RECOVERY RATE necessary for your home or business.  This will help you select the best option for your oil fired water heater replacement.

I took the time to put this together to better educate you about your options.   Please do not send it to other plumbing companies, prices vary based on many factors.
Please contact us to schedule your appointment.

How much does a 50 gallon oil water heater cost?

Oil fired water heaters are expensive, the Bock 51e is one of the more expensive options because it’s the best name in oil fired water heaters.

It’s more efficient, better built, longer lasting, and all around a better product that any other manufacture offers on the oil fired water heater market.

If you need a new tank and burner you might have been recently surprised to learn the tank and burner cost a small fortune.  As much as the most highly efficiency water heaters on the market.

The Material Costs Of Oil Fired Water Heaters Are Very Expensive.
Don’t kill the messenger.

Fact:  The Bock 51e-  Depending on what supplier we’re purchasing from, the cost at our wholesalers is over  $1,300- tank only.  (with zero mark-up).  Not including the burner, not including any venting, no copper, nothing besides the tank.

We, just like any other contractor in America charge a mark-up to cover any potential warranty needs and some business expenses associated with the installation.   There are also materials such as; copper adapters, silver solder, flux, fuel for the torch, copper and venting materials that go into every oil fired water heater installation.   Our mark-up rate is 20%, low for the heating industry.  So with the additional materials and our very modest market-up, that Bock 51e really costs $1,565 and that’s just for the tank.   A new burner costs another $400 with no mark-up and no labor to install it.

When you hear our installation manager tell you a Bock 51e costs $2,800 dollars, please realize, we’re hardly making any money at that price!

If we want to pay all our business expenses, the guys to install your oil fired water heater and have a little extra to send our kids in college, we would need to be well over 3k for a new bock 51e installation.  (And many companies are.)  However, we know CT homeowners are hurting, small business are hurting just as bad too so we have dropped our installation prices to all time lows.

We offer low prices, but must cover risk.

Installing oil fired water heater come with a level of certain risk. The risk of manufacturing defects on the tank, issues with the burner, control systems, and we have the safety concerns.  We have to “own” your installation for a long time, and we need to legitimize that risk and our warranty.  There are many factors that go into your quote.

Labor for installing an oil fired water heater CT

oil fired heater installers

If your oil fired water heater is located in a pit with no stairs, under duct work, in the basement of your home (like this)- your “labor cost” will be higher than a conventional install.

What is the labor for installing an oil fired water heater?

We hear that at least 2-3 times a week.

Please allow me to explain what that “labor charge” represents.

When looking at the total cost of a $2,000 oil fired water heater replacement you must realize only about .25-.30% can be considered “labor”.

Besides the water heater tank, oil burner we have other parts associated with installing the burner, and the low voltage electrical connections, the safety kill switch, vent piping, we also make combustion adjustments to the unit.   This is so you have a properly working burner, the temperature settings are adjusted, you don’t get carbon monoxide poisoning and your water heater burns as little fuel as possible.  Copper piping, copper fittings, flux, solder, fuel for the torch are all required for a oil fired water heater installation.

$500-700 dollar installation service is NOT “labor“

Please don’t be the person that does some basic internet research and finds out what a water heater tank costs, subtract that from a quote and say something like..   “oh you guys are charging me (X amount) of dollars in LABOR?“   Ugh, people like this clearly have never owned a business, so let us break it down quickly.

Remember, we need to travel to your home, in a truck (we paid for) or are making payments on, and it requires fuel, oil, tires, fluids, reregistration and insurance.  We need to bring expensive tools, years of experience, all the necessary acquired skills to do the job.  Our installers went to school for 4 years, did 3,500 hours of training just to get licensed and all carry at least a 2 million dollar insurance policy.  Our installers are not only traditional plumbers, they are experienced with oil fired products (and there are not many of us left.)   We need to remove, drive to New Haven to properly dispose of your old equipment at the recycling facility.  There is more than just installing the tank that goes into your quote-

Don’t forget about our business expenses-
Like any other business we have bills from; office phones, cell phones, trucks, tools, insurance, workers comp, accounts with wholesalers, office suppliers, websites, servers, marketing, office help, an accountant.   You are paying for a portion of every single business expense we have, and obliviously the men preforming the work at your home, the tools they are using, and the truck they arrived in.  So when you think to yourself about “labor chargers” Please think about the total picture.

Safe > Sorry

Oil fired water heaters contain enough force (if a major accident happens) to desultory your home and devastate your life.  Oil fired water heaters produce as many BTU’s and can hold enough potential stored energy as a very powerful bomb.   DO NOT TRUST SOME GUY WORKING PART TIME IN THE HOME DEPOT PLUMBING SECTION INSTALL YOUR OIL FIRED WATER HEATER!  He or she certainly does Not have a fuel combustion analyzer, and he or she will not be back at your house if the burner shuts down, you smell carbon in the air, or see black shoot coming out of your chimney!  God forbid, having an inexperienced oil man install an oil fired water heater could be the worse mistake of your adult life.

But I Desperately Need To Save Money On My Oil Fired Water Heater Installation Costs!  We hear that a lot too-

$500-700 is the best we can do for an oil fired water heater installation, sorry if that doesn’t fit in your budget.   You can save money on the installation of almost anything else you need for your home, but not heating products.  If someone makes a mistake installing your sink, faucet, dishwasher, washing machine etc-  you might get a small water leak.   An oil fired water heater can not only leak, it can flood your home, the oil line could be compromised, dangerous carbon monoxide needs to be properly vented.

Feel free to get anyone working part time in the plumbing section of your local home depot to install your new faucet, toilet, sink, dishwasher, washing machine, fence etc.   Those things will not kill you or destroy your home if they fail!

I REPEAT DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL A OIL FIRED WATER HEATER UNLESS YOU ARE A LICENSED PLUMBER, WITH EXPERIENCE IN OIL FIRED PRODUCTS- BURNERS- AND PROPER COMBUSTION TRAINING!

For 500-700 bucks we will get the job done 100% correctly, you can sleep well at night knowing everything is perfect.   Peace of mind for the next 15+ years is certainly worth our low oil water heater  installation rates.  If you desperately need to save some money we may be able to help you save money off the equipment by using scratched & dented tanks, disconnected models, out dated products, used water heater tanks and reusing the burner- if possible. .

How long should a Bock water heater last?

Water Heaters CT

Bock water heater The service life of a residential Bock water heater greatly depends on the supply of water.    In areas with untreated “hard water” standard glass-lined oil-fired water heater tank may only last 6-7 years.   On the other hand, in areas with naturally clean water, we have seen Bock water heaters lasting 25 years.   (Get a sediment filter installed on the Cold side of your water heater if you live in an area with Hard Water.)    On average Bock water heater tanks last 12-16 years in our area of operation, New Haven Connecticut.

Well water always has different types of minerals naturally within the water, and some areas have a higher mineral content than others.  The geographic location around Ridgefield CT has notoriously hard water, and well water in Shelton CT is free from hard water problems for the most part.   Note: City or town provided water usually does not  have issues with hard water since it passes through a water treatment facility on before arriving at your home.

Why minerals/ “hard water” is problematic for water heaters.  Minerals within the “hard water” eagerly want to break down the water heaters’ inner steel tank, (water eats steel for breakfast) and your basic steel water heater is modestly equipped to defends itself from hard water with two levels of protection.   The first is a Glass-Lining, and the second is a self-sacrificing Anode Rod.    The glass lining is exactly what is sounds like, the inner steel tank is sprayed with liquid glass and it bonds to the steel walls.   Anode Rods provide another layer of protection but by design, they get eaten up by the minerals, instead of the water heater.

**IF you have normal city provided water (not well water) and your Bock water heater started leaking before 10 years of it’s original installation, the water heater was most likely handled roughly on it’s way to your home.   Though these tanks are heavy, however the glass-lining makes them are very fragile.  If they are dropped on bagged around, the inner glass-lined can get cracked and if so, water starts to eat the water heater’s steel tank much faster than normal, the tank then fails prematurely.  When this happens the water heater usually fails in the 5-7 year range.

Rear vented oil-fired water heaters are rare.   They are found within homes that have short ceilings, or low exhaust venting heights.  Rear vented tanks have the exhaust vent exiting the tank, from the side, or “rear” of the tank-   NOT On Top of the tank, as the exhaust venting is normally found on all other types of oil and gas water heaters.   Rear vented tanks are more expensive than standard “top vented” oil-fired tanks.  John Wood is one-of-two manufactures that offer a rear vented oil-fired water heater, the other is Thermaflow- Everhot.  The homeowners wanted to reuse their existing burner, and since it was only 7 years old and in perfect working condition, we re-installed the burner.  Swamping out burners is alright as long as you stick with the same exact tank, after checking with the manufacture first to confirm that the measurements are the same.

bradford white oil water heater Bradford white oil water heater installers, quotes, repairs, replacements and new installations.

We don’t often talk about Bradford White oil-fired water heaters on this website because of their high price and low performance numbers, compared to the Bock and other manufactures of oil-fired water heaters.  Bradford White vs Bock oil water heaters, Bock wins every time.  Surprising to me, when looking at the performance sheets on the Bradford White is was shockingly low.   An old 50 gallon Bradford White oil water heater produces less hot water than a new 32 gallon Bock.  Bradford White oil water heaters contain no components or features that make it better than the more readily available oil water heaters.

If you need help with a Bradford White oil water heater give us a call.  We are local bradford white experts.

Bradford white oil water heater

Why can’t I find a Bradford White oil water heater?

  1.  Oil fired water heaters are the most expensive type to buy, and to produce for manufactures. . Over the last 5 years some water heater manufactures that once offered oil-fired water heaters no longer do, or in very limited production numbers.
  2. Heating equipment supply stores don’t have enough phyiscal space to carry more than 1 or 2 oil water heater brands, and the brand that got dropped from most suppliers in Connecticut was Bradford White.  Note:  Bradford White still offers; electric, natural gas, and propane water heaters.

These days, 2016, in Connecticut the 3 most popular manufactures of oil fired water heaters are;

  • Bock,                          (most popular – best built)
  • Thermaflow- Everhot, (very popular – lower cost option)
  • John Wood                   (multiple venting options)

Two other manufactures offer oil fired water heaters in Connecticut for an additional delivery fee.

  • AO Smith   (special delivery only)
  • HTP        (special delivery only)

Thermaflow water heaters

Water Heaters CT

Like most manufactures according to the Thermaflow website, they make all types of water heaters in all sizes.  In reality, you will only see two types of Thermaflow water heaters in homes.   More specifically, Theraflow water heaters are only found in homes that heat with heating oil.

The two most common types of Thermaflow-everthot water heaters you will see in homes throughout New England.

  1.  Aquabooster  Tank
  2. Oil-fired  Water Heater

    Thermaflow Water Heaters

thermaflow water heatersaquabooster water heaterAquabooster Thermaflow-everhot water heater is a Storage Tank, (left) it simply holds hot water created from a near by boiler. (right) 99% of the time a thermaflow WB aquabooster is fed hot water from a boilers Tankless Coil.   This water heater has No exhaust vent because it doesn’t require the combustion any fuel, again it’s just a storage tank.  An aquabooster tank also has a circulator pump, used to boost available hot water GPM’s.  The circulator pump is wired to a thermostatic well within the side of the tank, and on the other end it it wired into the boiler in some manner, either to a rely zone box, or direct connected in a number of ways. Ultimately a low voltage single is sent from within the water heater’s well, to the boiler in order to give the commend to “send more hot water.”  Without this aspect of low voltage wiring, the circulator pump would run all day wasting electrical power and the water heater would be “call for heat,” which would be a huge waste of heating oil- or simply won’t work at all.  There  is zero maintenance with this type of water heater/ storage tank.

thermaflow oil water heaterAn oil fired water heater from Thermaflow- everhot or any other company all work the same way.  Essentially you have a tank of water sitting on top of a separate lower section of the tank, called the heat chamber or fire box.  Sticking directly out of the front of the water heater tank is an oil Burner.  A oil burner is easy to identify because it will Always have 1, or 2 oil lines connecting to it.  This water heater has a 6″ silver exhaust vent connecting to it either directly on top, or on the side.   When the exhausts vent is located on the side of the tank, it’s called a Rear Vented model.   Thermalflow is only one of two manufactures that offer a rear vented oil fired water heater in our area- Connecticut.  Compared to other oil fired water heaters Thermaflow offers the lower cost alternative to other manufactures.
